Detroit Environmental Justice Tour - Michigan Interfaith Power & Light

Detroit Environmental Justice Tour

Photo from MLive, "Is Detroit becoming a national dumping ground for hazardous waste?"

This tour will expose attendees to the history, challenges, and triumphs of Michigan’s most polluted zip code: 48217, a community surrounded by dozens of industries that have had devastating effects on residents’ health, quality of life and wellbeing.

The tour will be led by local activist Theresa Landrum, who will share her perspective on the community's fight for justice, and Justin Onwenu, an organizer with the Sierra Club, who will provide context on how the struggles in 48217 connect to the larger national and global conversation around environmental and climate justice.

The bus will depart from Kemeny Recreation Center promptly at 1pm, so please arrive at 12:45.

The Tour will stop at and drive by key Environmental Injustice sites, including:

  • Marathon Refinery
  • New Mt. Hermon Church Community Air Monitor
  • AK Steel
  • DTE Energy
  • Zug Island

Advance registration is required.  The tour will happen rain or shine and tickets are non-refundable.
