CFLs and Mercury Questions?

Q: Many residential customers are using screw-based compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). I know CFLs reduce energy use and last a long time, but they also contain mercury. Is there a net environmental benefit? Answer

Q. How do these CFLs compare to the incandescent lights I’m using now?

A. Compact fluorescent lights [CFLs] use one-fourth the electricity that incandescent lights use.  Further, they last much longer [up to 10,000 as opposed to the 700 hours of a typical incandescent light].

Q. What is the difference between the lamps offered on the shopping cart and the lamps sold at Costco, Home Depot, Ace, etc.? (top)

A. The lamps that the big box stores sell are a residential version.  Almost all of the lamps that are on the IPL shopping cart are either commercial or industrial grade.  This means that they will last from 30% to 50% longer on average.  In addition, the lights sold on the shopping cart will be less variable in the color they emanate.

Q. What bulbs can be used in dimmable fixtures? (top)

A. Only those CFLs labeled as dimmable fixture are dimmable.  You can also use the cold cathode candelabra lamps in any dimmable application [NOTE: TCP is expected to come out with a dimmable switch by June of 2007 that can make dimmable any CFL]

Q. How do I know what wattage of CFL I need to replace the incandescent lamp I’m currently using? (top)

A. A good basic way to determine the wattage of a CFL needed to replace an incandescent bulb is to divide the wattage of the incandescent bulb that the CFL will replace by 4.5.  Then pick the CFL bulb that comes closest to that comes closest to that wattage—i.e. 60W incandescent divided by 4.5=13 watts.

Q. What are the shipping charges? (top)

A.

Order Total Freight
$ 50.00 - $ 99.99 $ 8.50
$100 - $199.99 $10.00
$200.00 - $299.99 $20.00
$300.00 - $399.99 $30.00
$400.00 - $499.00 $40.00
$500.00 + Free Shipping

Q. What do I do if I receive a defective product? (top)

A. If you receive a defective product let us know by e-mail or by phone and return the product for a free replacement.  In order to qualify for a free replacement you will need to inform us within one week of receiving the product.

Q. What if I can’t find the product I need? (top)

A. If you can’t find the product you need on the shopping cart you may contact your state IPL representative.  Or you may contact us at the Michigan IPL site and we will help you find the right products.  Or you may contact Chuck Wood of TCP [cwood@tcpi.com] and he can provide technical assistance.  There are over 107,000 lighting products from which to choose.  So chances are that we can supply the product you need.  Since there only about 80 lighting products pictured on the shopping cart there is a link from the shopping cart to the TCP website/catalog.  There you will be able to find descriptions of the various lighting possibilities from which to choose.

Q.  I made an order on the shopping cart and wanted to change the quantity.  However, when I went to check-out the quantity didn’t change.  How come? (top)

A. Don’t forget to press the “Update” button each time you make a change in your order.  Otherwise the change won’t be recorded.

Q. How do I know it’s safe to submit my credit card number? (top)

A. The IPL Shopping Cart uses Authorize.net as its credit card processing company through Chase Bank.  All information provided in the check-out section of the shopping cart is contained within Aurhorize.net and is not available to IPL through the shopping cart administration.

Q. How do I cancel my order? (top)

A. You can send an email message to sales@miipl.org stating the order number.  You will then be contacted by a representative of IPL, who will confirm the cancellation and obtain your credit card information so your purchase will be revered on the credit card.  If you purchase using a personal check, your check will be returned to you within 7 days after placing your order.

Q. What methods of payment does the shopping cart accept? (top)

A. You can purchase items on the shopping cart by using the following credit cards: Discover, American Express, Visa or MasterCard.  Or you may use a personal check, certified check or money order.

Q. How fast can you get my order to me? (top)

A. Normally, for items in stock, delivery occurs within 3 to 5 business days.

Q.  What happens if my order is lost or damaged? (top)

A. If the order is lost in transit, the distributor will track the order and work with the shipping company to verify the order was not delivered.  Once there is verification of the lost order, the order will be re-sent to you.

If the order is damaged, the distributor will request that the damaged items be returned and new items from your order will be re-sent to you.

Q. Will the shopping cart sell my name and address to other companies? (top)

A. No, all information you provide in the IPL shopping cart is confidential and will never be sold to another company.

Q. Will you substitute items that might not be available? (top)

A. If the distributor is out of stock on the items you ordered, the distributor will contact you to see if you would like to substitute another item for the out-of-stock item.

Q. Where can I go to find out where I can recycle old CFLs in my area? (top)

A. There is a search tool that can help you find hazardous recycling centers in your zip code. You can find that search tool at http://www.earth911.org/master.asp.  Energy Star has published an information sheet on CFLs and mercury. You can find this sheet at http://www.energystar.gov/ia/partners/promotions/change_light/downloads/Fact_Sheet_Mercury.pdf.
